6 types of Charlotte NC home additions

You love your home, but sometimes, it would be nice to have a little extra space. If you don’t want to move, building an addition onto your home is a great way to add more space and improve your home’s functionality without having to pack up and relocate. Here’s a look at some of the different types of home additions available in the Charlotte area.

Room addition

In a room addition project, an entire new room is added to your home. This could be a bedroom, bathroom, living room, dining room, or other living space. Since a whole new room is being added, room additions may also require plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work. The new room must also be built to specific building codes. Room additions can be costly, but the result is more space for your family to enjoy and potentially an increase in the resale value of your home.

Bump out

While room additions add completely new rooms, bump outs add extra space to existing rooms. A bump out might be used to add more space in a kitchen for cooking and eating, to make a small bedroom bigger, to add a reading nook or closet, and more. It’s a convenient way to add more space to your home without a full addition. Pricing for bump outs vary based on size, but they tend to cost less than room additions because they’re typically less complex projects requiring fewer contractors and permits.

Sunroom

Sunrooms are another option for Charlotte NC home additions. A sunroom is a room built onto an existing exterior wall of the home. Rather than solid walls, sunrooms are typically built to have large windows to let in the sunlight (hence the name ‘sunroom’). Additionally, these rooms sometimes don’t have heating or cooling. Sunrooms are often used for relaxing, with homeowners adding furniture for seating to watch TV, read a book, or enjoy watching a storm while staying dry.

Dormer

Similar to a bump out, a dormer adds more space to your attic or top story by expanding an area in the front or back of your home. It can make your home more functional, and even let in more light with the inclusion of a dormer window. While it does involve some roof work, a dormer can improve your home’s curb appeal.

Garage conversion

While not technically an addition, converting your garage into a living space is another great way to make your home roomier. Since garage conversions include transforming an attached garage into a finished living area, this process often involves HVAC work, the addition of insulation and more to make the room more comfortable. Whether you’re looking for another bedroom, living room, office or other space, a garage conversion may be the right choice.

Second story

If you’re looking for Charlotte NC home additions that drastically increase the amount of space in your home, adding a second story to your ranch-style house may be a good option. Since this requires a bit of work, this type of addition can be on the expensive side, but it does add lots of square footage to your home and may even increase your home’s value.
